Halloween Costumes for Kids

Halloween is strange, no doubt. We dress up, walk around the neighborhood and say “trick or treat” to strangers. Has anyone ever had the misfortune of receiving a trick? What would that even mean, razor blade apples and molly disguised as a sweet tart? The way traditions and rituals come about is so interesting, so lets take a look at some fun facts about this peculiar holiday.

  • Originally, you had to perform a choreographed dance door to door to get a treat. As much work as that sounds, that’s kind of right up my cheerleader alley. 5-6-7-8
  • Some animal shelters won’t allow black cats to be adopted around Halloween because of the concern of sacrifice. WHOA.
  • Christians trying to convert pagans, changed an ancient holiday into a 3 day celebration. The first night was called All Hallow’s Eve, which is now Halloween. So the Devil can’t claim allllll of Halloween. Huh.
  • Owls were believed to be witches and if they said “hooooo hoooooo” then it meant someone was about to die.
  • Legend has it that if you see a spider on Halloween, someone you love is watching over you.
  • Ahhhhh, just figured out where the trick part came from, and it’s not drugs in candy bars. In Scotland and Ireland kids would go to house to house and if they performed a trick, like a dance or song, they would be given a treat. This makes it far less creepy. Or more creepy, I can’t decide.
  • Hollywood outlawed Silly String on Halloween, unless you want $1000 fine.
  • Candy corn was originally called chicken feed. Both names and the actual candy are gross IMO.

So now get your kid a cute costume, work on a choreographed dance as a family and go ahead and forget about your dream to adopt a black cat in October. Happy Halloween.
